Tbilisi is around 280 km from Yerevan; Batumi roughly 650 km. Both are comfortably drivable in a day, and for most Armenian families the road trip is half the fun. Here is the practical version of the route — with the paperwork sorted before you leave.
The classic route runs Yerevan → Ashtarak → Aparan → Vanadzor → Bagratashen, entering Georgia at Sadakhlo. From there Tbilisi is barely an hour. Count on 5–6 hours door to door with a border stop. For Batumi, continue west via Khashuri and Kutaisi on the S1 highway — a further 5–6 hours, so many families overnight in Tbilisi and split the drive.
Budget-wise, fuel is the main line item. Petrol in Georgia is typically cheaper than in Armenia; filling up after the border saves a little on every trip. There are no road tolls on the standard routes, parking in central Tbilisi is zone-based and cheap by European standards, and Batumi's seafront lots fill up by noon in August — arrive early.
A few road notes: Georgian mountain sections between Vanadzor and the border are winding and poorly lit at night — plan to cross in daylight. Speed cameras are frequent on the S1; fines follow the plate, including foreign plates, and unpaid fines surface when you exit the country.
