Entry requirement since 2026

What travel insurance do I need to enter Georgia in 2026?

Since 1 January 2026 every tourist entering Georgia must hold health and accident insurance for the whole stay, with an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000. The rule is Government of Georgia Resolution No. 602 of 26 December 2025, adopted under the Law on Tourism. The policy may be issued by a Georgian or a foreign insurer, on paper or electronically, and must be in Georgian or English. Border officers may ask to see it. Only a short list of people is exempt — diplomats, accredited staff of missions and international organisations, people covered by an international agreement, and drivers in international freight and passenger transport.

What the resolution requires

  • Who: tourists entering Georgia, of any nationality, whether or not they need a visa. Georgian citizens are not tourists under the rule.
  • What: health and accident insurance — cover for medical treatment and accidents during the trip, not a general travel policy for baggage or cancellations.
  • How much: an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000. The resolution writes the figure in lari; a policy in another currency has to be worth at least that much.
  • How long: the whole period of stay in Georgia, from the day you arrive to the day you leave.
  • Form: paper or electronic, in Georgian or English, from an insurer authorised in Georgia or abroad. A PDF on your phone is enough.

Where it is checked

The resolution gives border authorities the right to verify the policy. In practice this means passport control at airports and land crossings, and airlines may ask for it at check-in because carriers are responsible for passengers refused at the border. Keep the certificate where you can open it without mobile data.

The policy should show the insurer, the insured person exactly as in the passport, the territory (Georgia), the dates and the insured sum. If any of these is missing or does not match, the document may not be accepted.

How Georgian APPA covers it

Georgian APPA arranges a Georgian travel medical policy issued by Unison Insurance for exactly the dates of your trip — from 3 to 180 days — for one traveller or a whole family in one order. The certificate is in English, states the GEL 30,000 insured sum, and is emailed right after payment.

If you are driving in on foreign plates, the same checkout also sells the compulsory Georgian car insurance, so both documents arrive together before you reach the border.

What tourists ask

Is travel insurance mandatory for Georgia?

Yes, since 1 January 2026. Resolution No. 602 of the Government of Georgia requires tourists to hold health and accident insurance with an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000 for the whole stay. A few categories are exempt, mainly diplomats and international transport drivers.

Does the GEL 30,000 have to be split between outpatient and inpatient care?

No. The resolution sets one total insured sum of at least GEL 30,000. Check that your policy shows at least that figure in total; there is no separate outpatient or inpatient minimum.

Can the policy be in my own language?

The resolution accepts policies in Georgian or English. A policy issued only in another language may not be accepted at the border even if the cover is sufficient.

Does the rule apply if I enter by car?

Yes. The travel insurance rule applies to every tourist regardless of how they enter. A foreign-registered car additionally needs Georgian compulsory third-party liability insurance (APPA/TPL), which is a separate policy.

How much does a compliant policy cost through Georgian APPA?

From $3.62 per traveller per day (about 9.39 GEL); the exact total depends on the traveller's age and the number of days and is shown in the form before you pay.
