Policies from home

Is my travel insurance from home accepted in Georgia?

Yes, if it meets four conditions from Resolution No. 602: it covers health and accident costs in Georgia, it is valid for every day of your stay, its insured sum is at least GEL 30,000 or the equivalent in another currency, and the document is in Georgian or English. The insurer may be foreign; the resolution accepts policies from insurers authorised in Georgia or abroad. If your policy fails any of the four — a worldwide plan that excludes Georgia, an annual plan whose sum is under the minimum, a certificate only in your own language — a Georgian policy for the trip is the simplest fix.

The four things to check on your policy

  • Territory: Georgia must be inside the covered area. "Europe" plans differ — some include Georgia, some stop at the EU. "Worldwide" plans usually include it. Look for Georgia by name or for the territorial definition.
  • Dates: cover must start no later than your arrival and end no earlier than your departure. An annual multi-trip plan counts, as long as the trip length is within its per-trip limit.
  • Sum: at least GEL 30,000 for medical and accident costs. Most plans quote limits in euros or dollars; convert at the current rate and leave a margin, because the border officer will not do the arithmetic for you.
  • Language: the document you show must be in Georgian or English. Many European insurers issue an English certificate on request; a policy only in Russian, Turkish, Arabic or Armenian may be refused.

Common cases

  • Bank-card insurance: often valid, but the card's insurance certificate rarely names Georgia and the sum is sometimes below the minimum. Ask the bank for an English certificate with the limit and territory stated.
  • Employer or corporate plans: acceptable if you can print or download a personal certificate in English with your name and the dates.
  • Armenian, Russian, Turkish or Kazakh domestic health insurance: these cover treatment at home, not abroad, and do not satisfy the rule.
  • EHIC or national health cards: not insurance for Georgia, which is outside the systems they belong to.

If your policy does not pass

Buying a Georgian policy for the trip is quicker than amending a foreign one. Georgian APPA arranges a Unison Insurance travel medical certificate in English for your exact dates, with the GEL 30,000 insured sum stated on it, delivered by email in minutes. You can keep your home policy for baggage, cancellation or higher limits; the two do not conflict.

What travellers ask

Does my worldwide travel insurance cover Georgia?

Usually yes, but confirm that Georgia is not excluded and that the medical limit is at least GEL 30,000 in your currency. The certificate you show at the border must be in English or Georgian.

Is Schengen travel insurance valid for Georgia?

Only if its territory includes Georgia. Schengen policies are often limited to the Schengen area or to "Europe" as the insurer defines it, and Georgia is not always inside that definition.

Can I show the policy on my phone?

Yes. Resolution No. 602 accepts electronic policies. Save the PDF so it opens without an internet connection.

Is a Georgian policy cheaper than fixing my foreign one?

Often, for a short trip: through Georgian APPA cover starts from $3.62 per traveller per day and is issued in minutes, while a foreign insurer may take days to add a country or raise a limit.
