If you drive a foreign-registered vehicle in Georgia without compulsory third-party liability insurance, the risk is not only administrative. The fine itself is limited, but the bigger problem is being personally responsible for damage you cause to other people.

The administrative fine
Driving a foreign-registered vehicle in Georgia without the required compulsory insurance can result in an administrative fine of 100–200 GEL.
This article does not describe that range as an automatic doubling mechanism unless the official authority handling your case says so.
What authorities can check
Compulsory insurance can be checked by the relevant Georgian authorities, including road-enforcement and border-control bodies using the official insurance system.
Buying your policy before arrival can save time at the border, but this article does not claim that border sellers always charge more or that a purchase there is always forced.
What compulsory TPL covers
Compulsory TPL is third-party liability cover. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle. Statutory limits used by the Georgian system include:
- up to 30,000 GEL per injured person for death, disability, or health damage
- medical services up to 15,000 GEL
- total bodily-injury limit up to 300,000 GEL per event
- up to 25,000 GEL for property damage per affected person
- total property-damage limit up to 50,000 GEL per event
These limits are defined by the compulsory system and should not be described as varying from one compulsory policy to another.
Why buying before you drive still makes sense
- it reduces the chance of delay at the border
- it lets you check your registration number, VIN, dates, and vehicle category calmly
- it gives you a PDF you can keep on your phone before you start driving
