Cashless hospital care in Georgia: what travel insurance can and cannot do
Direct billing at hospitals in Georgia may sometimes be arranged, but it depends on the insurer, assistance provider, hospital, and the circumstances of the case.
Some travelers in Georgia are able to receive treatment without paying the hospital first, but cashless treatment is never something to assume. Whether direct billing is possible depends on the insurer, the assistance provider, the hospital, and the medical situation.

Buy medical insuranceHow cashless treatment usually works
In the best-case scenario, the hospital contacts your insurer or assistance provider, the case is reviewed, and the provider issues a payment guarantee or other approval for covered treatment. This is more likely in larger private hospitals and emergency situations than in small outpatient clinics.
What you should do first
- call the assistance or emergency number shown on your policy as soon as possible
- show the hospital your passport and policy details
- ask the hospital to speak directly with the insurer or assistance provider
- keep screenshots or offline copies of your policy and contact details
What can go wrong
Even when your policy is valid, a hospital may still ask for a deposit or upfront payment. This can happen if:
- the guarantee has not been issued yet
- the hospital does not have a direct-billing arrangement for your insurer
- the treatment is outpatient or non-urgent
- the policy limit, exclusions, or documentation are unclear
If that happens, pay only if necessary, collect itemized receipts and medical records, and ask your insurer how to file for reimbursement.
What this article does not promise
This article does not promise that:
- a specific hospital will always accept direct billing
- a guarantee will be issued within a fixed number of minutes or hours
- deposit reimbursement is automatic
- every policy sold for entry purposes guarantees cashless treatment
Separate point: entry insurance and hospital billing are not the same thing
Since January 1, 2026, most foreign visitors entering Georgia need health and accident insurance for the whole stay with a minimum insured sum of 30,000 GEL. That legal entry requirement does not by itself guarantee that any hospital will treat you cashlessly.
