Do I need Georgian car insurance at the Red Bridge border?

Where Red Bridge is and what it serves

Red Bridge — Tsiteli Khidi on the Georgian side — sits on the main road between Tbilisi and western Azerbaijan, about 45 km southeast of the capital past Rustavi. It is the crossing most drivers use between the two capitals. Lagodekhi, in the northeast, is the alternative for the Zaqatala and Sheki side of the country.

Land-border rules on the Azerbaijani side change from time to time and are set by Azerbaijan, so check their current status before planning the route. The Georgian insurance requirement described here is unaffected by that: it applies to any foreign-plated vehicle on Georgian roads, whichever crossing it came through.

What the Georgian policy covers

• Death or injury to a third party: up to 30 000 GEL per injured person, and 300 000 GEL for all claims from one event.
• Medical treatment for an injured third party: up to 15 000 GEL per person.
• Damage to someone else's property: up to 25 000 GEL per victim, and 50 000 GEL per event.
• It does not cover damage to your own vehicle, and it does not cover the health of you or your passengers — that is what travel medical insurance is for.

Before you set off

• Have the registration document to hand: the policy is issued against the plate, the VIN or chassis number and the vehicle category.
• Match the policy to the trip length, and remember it must cover every day the car is inside Georgia, not only the days you are driving it.
• Since 1 January 2026 most foreign visitors also need travel medical insurance with an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000 for the whole stay.
