Two policies

Do I need travel insurance if I already have Georgian car insurance?

Yes. They are two different policies for two different things. Georgian compulsory car insurance (APPA/TPL) covers the damage your foreign-registered vehicle causes to other people; it pays nothing for your own medical treatment. Travel medical insurance, required for tourists since 1 January 2026 under Resolution No. 602, covers your health and accident costs in Georgia with an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000. A driver entering on foreign plates needs the car policy for the vehicle and a travel medical policy for every person in the car, including the driver. Georgian APPA sells both in one order.

What each policy does

  • Car insurance (APPA/TPL): compulsory for any foreign-registered vehicle driven in Georgia. Pays third parties for injury and property damage your car causes — up to 30 000 GEL per injured person and 25 000 GEL per damaged vehicle or property. Checked electronically by number plate. Does not cover you, your passengers or your car.
  • Travel medical insurance: required for tourists entering Georgia since 2026. Pays for your own medical treatment and accidents during the stay, with an insured sum of at least GEL 30,000. Checked at passport control. Does not cover the car.

Who in the car needs what

  • The vehicle: one car policy for the period it is in Georgia — 15 days, 1 month or 1 year.
  • The driver: a travel medical policy for the days of the stay.
  • Every passenger, including children: their own travel medical policy or a named place on a family policy, each with the GEL 30,000 insured sum.

Buying both at once

In the Georgian APPA checkout, add the car with its plate and registration details, then add each person with their passport details and the travel dates, and pay once. The car policy is registered against the plate; each traveller's Unison Insurance certificate arrives by email. Both are issued in minutes, so this works the evening before or in the queue at the border.

What drivers ask

Does Georgian car insurance cover my medical costs after an accident?

No. It covers the people your vehicle injures and the property it damages. Your own treatment is paid by your travel medical insurance.

Do my passengers need travel insurance?

Yes. Every tourist entering Georgia needs it, whether they drive or ride. Each passenger needs cover with at least GEL 30,000 for the whole stay.

Can I buy only the car policy and skip the medical one?

You can buy them separately, but you need both to comply: the car policy for the vehicle and a medical policy for each person. Driving without the car policy carries a fine of 100–200 GEL; entering without medical cover can be refused at passport control.

Do the two policies need the same dates?

Not necessarily. The car policy comes in fixed terms of 15 days, 1 month or 1 year; the travel policy is priced per day for your exact stay. Both must cover the whole time you and the car are in Georgia.

What does it cost to add travel insurance to a car order?

From $3.62 per person per day, depending on age and days. Through Georgian APPA a 15-day car policy for a passenger car is $20.00; the travel policy is priced separately for each person.
