From Russia

Do Russian citizens need travel insurance for Georgia?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026 every tourist entering Georgia, whatever their nationality, needs health and accident insurance of at least GEL 30,000 for the whole stay, under Resolution No. 602. Visa-free entry does not change this. The policy may come from a Russian or a Georgian insurer, but the document must be in English or Georgian — a certificate in Russian only does not meet the rule. A Georgian policy through Georgian APPA is issued by Unison Insurance in English and emailed within minutes.

What the rule means for travellers from Russia

  • Every traveller needs cover, children included: health and accident insurance for Georgia, every day of the stay, at least GEL 30,000.
  • The certificate must be in English or Georgian. Many Russian travel policies are issued in Russian; ask the insurer for an English certificate or buy a Georgian policy.
  • Border guards may check the policy on arrival, at the airport or at the road crossing. Keep the PDF where it opens without mobile internet.

Driving in through Upper Lars

Upper Lars (Dariali), on the Georgian Military Road about 200 km from Vladikavkaz to Tbilisi, is the only land crossing between Russia and Georgia. Queues in season can take many hours and mobile coverage at the border is unreliable, so buy the policy before you set off. A car on Russian plates also needs Georgian car insurance: Russian OSAGO is not valid in Georgia.

Buying a Georgian policy

Georgian APPA arranges a Unison Insurance travel medical certificate for your exact dates — 3 to 180 days — for every traveller in one order. It states the GEL 30,000 insured sum and arrives by email within minutes. If a card issued by a Russian bank does not go through, write to support on WhatsApp or Telegram, available around the clock, and we will tell you how to pay.

What travellers from Russia ask

Russians do not need a visa for Georgia. Is insurance still required?

Yes. The visa regime and the insurance rule are separate; Resolution No. 602 applies to all tourists. Check current entry conditions on geoconsul.gov.ge.

Is a Russian insurance policy accepted?

Yes, if it covers Georgia, every day of the stay and at least GEL 30,000, and the certificate is in English or Georgian. A Russian-only certificate does not meet the rule.

I am driving through Upper Lars. Do I need both policies?

Yes. Travel medical insurance covers the people; Georgian car insurance (TPL) covers damage the car causes to others. Both can be paid in one order.

How much does it cost?

Each traveller is priced by age band and days, from $3.62 per person per day. The form shows the exact total before payment.
